Covering Your Bases: An Examiner’s Viewpoint on Risk Management in Today’s Market

In this track, attendees will benefit from the insights of long-term appraisal veteran, Robert Parson, whose unique perspective is shaped by years as a National Appraisal Policy Advisor at the OCC. What do new regulatory proposals, including an effort seeking to ease the appraisal threshold for commercial real estate borrowers, mean for risk managers? As property prices level out and the likelihood of another market downturn increases, what should lenders be doing to protect themselves and respond effectively to the scrutiny of examiners? What are the most valuable practices that institutions can implement to demonstrate “safe and sound” commercial real estate lending practices? What are the common pitfalls that arise during examinations? Looking to the future, is there a role for technology applications in improving the efficiency of how banks manage the appraisal function?

Robert L. Parson is a former Senior Appraisal Policy Advisor, Office of the Comptroller of the Currency in Washington, DC. In his capacity at the OCC, he served as a member of the Appraisal Subcommittee of FFIEC from 2009 to 2011. In addition to advising bank examiners and conducting target bank exams, he spent much of his time in interagency rulemaking resulting from the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act.
